Ab stract In 1996 data from labo ra to ries, gen eral prac ti tio ners and a na tional em ployer were com bined to de tect trends in in flu enza ac tiv ity in Aus tra lia. An epi demic of in flu enza A (H3N2) was re corded. Lit tle in flu enza B ac tiv ity was noted through out the win ter months, how ever the number of labo ra tory re ports of in flu enza B rose in the last quar ter of the year. In flu enza ac tiv ity was re flected in the con sul ta tion rates re corded by sen ti nel gen eral prac ti tio ner re port ing schemes. Of par ticu lar note was the Tropi cal In flu enza Sur veil lance in the North ern Ter ri tory which dem on strated a bi mo dal epi demic pat tern. There was no ap par ent trend in na tional ab sen tee ism rates re corded by a na tional em ployer. Comm Dis In tell 1997;21:101105.
